During the utilization of structural analysis software packages, the engineer should be aware of the underlying mathematical models, in order to select the right type of structural modeling, the appropriate numerical solutions, and algorithms and to be able to critically utilize the results of the analysis. For instance, the modeling of the same structure, or even the same structural part with different types of elements, might lead to numerical results of 50%-100% or more divergence. The engineering judgment, in conjunction with the knowledge of the theoretical background, constitutes critical factors for the safe and inexpensive integration of the structural design. SAP2000 is well known for its broad coverage of structural analysis algorithms, widely used for scientific research as well as finite element analysis of real-world structures, such as bridges, dams, shell structures, membrane shelters etc, while ETABS is used for structural analysis of buildings. Utilizing their open programming interface, the engineer is able to release plugins, such as specific design checks, optimization algorithms etc.
